This Park is located a mere 12 kilometers from Kathmandu, on the northern rim of the Valley. Apart from it’s importance as a national park, Shivapuri is an important source for Kathmandu Valley as drinking water is tapped from several rivers, including the holy Bagmati and Bishnumati, originate here.
With a transitional climate between tropical and temperate, Shivapuri has natural forests which consist of pine, oak and rhododendron and many types of smaller plants. The Park is home to the Himalayan black bear, the leopard and many troops of rhesus monkeys. Of birds, there are no less than 177 species while 102 types of butterflies flutter here. An interesting note: one can find 129 species of mushrooms in this Park.
Look north, you get splendid views of the northern Himalayas. Look south, you get a panoramic picture of Kathmandu Valley.
One can go on short treks within the Park: Panimuhan to Shivapuri Peak-2732 m (12 km); Panimuhan to Sikre (12 km); Nagigumba to Baghdwar (Tiger’s Door) to Chisapani (18 km); Nagigumba to Shivapuri Peak (6 km); Shivapuri to Kakani; Jhule to Chisapani (12 km) and Chisapani to Sundarijal (22 km).
