Giving monetary tips to guides, drivers, porters and hotel staff is not mandatory but when the service has been good, it is a universal practice, and always appreciated by the recipients although, till recently, it was forbidden by the Chinese government. Also, as a dictionaries and foreign language literature are also acceptable provided the latter two items are strictly of a non-political nature.

Giving chocolates, balloons or money to children is highly discouraged as this leads to aggravated begging. Instead, give children books, postcards, pens and pencils.
